A careful approach to corrosion, connections and the bits of the battery compartment that usually get ignored.

A dusty battery tray and crusted terminals can make an otherwise healthy electrical system seem unreliable. The job is small, but the order matters.

With the car off and keys away, disconnect the negative terminal first and then the positive. Brush away dry corrosion carefully and use a battery-safe cleaner according to its instructions. Avoid soaking surrounding components.

Once everything is dry, reconnect the positive terminal and then the negative. The clamps should sit firmly without being forced. A thin protective coating formulated for battery terminals can slow future corrosion.

If corrosion returns quickly or the battery case is damaged, the cleaning routine has done its job: it has revealed a problem worth diagnosing rather than concealing.
