A measured look at depth, wear patterns and the moments when a tyre deserves more than a quick glance.

Tyre checks do not need a lift, a workshop light or an hour set aside. Park on level ground, turn the steering slightly when needed, and look at the inner and outer shoulders as well as the centre tread.

Start with the tread-wear bars embedded across the grooves. When the surrounding tread is level with those bars, the tyre has reached the point where replacement should be arranged. A simple gauge gives a clearer reading and helps you compare all four corners.

The pattern matters as much as the number. Wear concentrated in the centre can point to over-inflation; worn shoulders can point to under-inflation. Feathered edges or one unusually tired tyre deserve a proper alignment and suspension check.

Record the reading in your phone, then revisit it after a few weeks. A small habit makes it much easier to notice a change before it becomes an expensive one.

A practical boundary

This guide helps you notice and prepare. It does not replace the vehicle handbook, a qualified technician or urgent roadside assistance where safety is involved.
