A short routine for reading the dipstick, spotting a change and avoiding the reflex to overfill.

Oil checks work best when the car is parked level and the engine has had time to settle. Pull the dipstick, wipe it clean, reinsert it fully and then read the level between the marked points.

The important question is not whether the oil looks like fresh honey. It is whether the level is safely within range and whether it is changing faster than normal. A steady record over a few checks is far more useful than reacting to a single glance.

If oil is low, add a small amount of the specified grade, wait, and check again. Overfilling can be as unhelpful as neglecting the level altogether.

Any sudden loss, warning light or unusual residue is a reason to stop treating the issue as routine maintenance and get the car inspected.

A practical boundary
